Pichavaram Mangrove Forest
Pichavaram is home to one of the largest mangrove forests in India, spanning over 1,100 hectares and comprising more than 1,100 tiny islands interlaced by an intricate network of waterways. Nestled between the Vellar and Coleroon estuaries, this extraordinary ecosystem is one of the most biodiverse wetlands in South Asia.
The forest served as a natural barrier during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, shielding coastal villages from the worst of the waves — a powerful testament to the protective power of mangrove ecosystems. Today it is recognised as one of Tamil Nadu's most precious natural heritage sites.
Boat rides through the narrow canals — some just wide enough for a single boat — reveal a hidden world of intertwining roots, exotic birds, and crystal-clear backwaters. Over 177 species of birds have been recorded here, making it a paradise for birdwatchers.

How to Reach from Vadalur
15 km from Vadalur via Chidambaram. ~20 min drive. Parking at the boat jetty.
Bus to Chidambaram, then local bus or auto to Pichavaram (8 km from Chidambaram).
Auto from Chidambaram bus stand to Pichavaram. ~₹100–150 one way.
Nearest station: Chidambaram (8 km from Pichavaram). Take auto from station.
Tips for Visitors
Go early morning (7–9 AM) for the best bird sightings and cooler temperatures.
Opt for a row boat over a motor boat — silence lets you hear the forest and spot more birds.
Carry insect repellent — mosquitoes can be intense, especially near the mangrove edges.
