Annamalai University

Annamalai University, established in 1929 by Raja Sir Annamalai Chettiar of Chettinad, is one of the largest residential universities in Asia. Spread across a sprawling 900-acre campus in Chidambaram, it is home to over 15,000 students, 2,500 faculty members, and more than 50 departments spanning arts, science, engineering, medicine, and agriculture.

The university campus itself is a visual landmark — its Indo-Saracenic architecture, wide tree-lined avenues, iconic clock tower, and lush green quadrangles have made it one of the most photographed campuses in South India. Visiting during the golden hours of early morning or late afternoon reveals an institution of extraordinary beauty and serenity.

For visitors from Vadalur, the university is a proud regional institution — generations of families across Cuddalore district have sent their children here. The campus is open to visitors and a leisurely walk through its grounds is a thoroughly rewarding experience.
