About the Temple

Where Shiva Danced
for Eternity

Thillai Nataraja Temple in Chidambaram is one of the most ancient and revered Shaivite temples in India. Dedicated to Lord Shiva in his form as Nataraja — the cosmic dancer — this magnificent temple is believed to be over 2,000 years old and represents one of the Pancha Bhuta Stalas, embodying the element of Akasha (space).

The presiding deity, Nataraja, is depicted in the iconic Ananda Tandava pose — the dance of bliss — symbolising the cycle of creation, preservation, and destruction of the universe. The temple's gopurams are adorned with over 108 classical Bharatanatyam poses (karanas), making it a living scripture of Indian classical art.

"Chidambaram is where Shiva revealed his true nature — not as a distant deity but as the very space in which all of creation dances." — Ancient Tamil Shaiva Scripture

The temple complex spans 40 acres and houses five grand halls and seven gopurams. The famous Chidambaram Rahasyam — an empty space within the sanctum representing the formless Divine — continues to draw spiritual seekers from across the world.

Uniquely, the complex is also home to the Govindaraja Perumal Temple — one of the 108 sacred Divya Desams of Lord Vishnu, as glorified in the Nalayira Divya Prabandham. This makes Chidambaram one of the very rare places in India where both Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu are enshrined and worshipped with equal reverence within the same sacred complex.

Natyanjali — Dance as Divine Offering

Every year during Maha Shivaratri (February/March), the Thillai Nataraja Temple becomes the stage for one of India's most celebrated classical dance festivals — the Natyanjali Dance Festival.

Bharatanatyam dancers from across India and the world travel to Chidambaram to offer their art as worship at the feet of Nataraja — the Lord of Dance himself. It is considered the highest honour a classical dancer can receive, performing before the cosmic dancer in his own abode.

The festival spans five days with performances at sunrise, during temple poojas, and under the open sky in the evening. Thousands of spectators attend, and the atmosphere is one of extraordinary devotion and artistic beauty.

Govindaraja Perumal — Vishnu at Chidambaram

Within the Nataraja temple complex stands one of the most sacred Vishnu shrines in South India — the Govindaraja Perumal Temple, one of the 108 Divya Desams glorified in the Nalayira Divya Prabandham by the Alvars.

Lord Vishnu here rests in a reclining posture as Govindaraja, with Goddess Pundarikavalli (Thayar) as his consort. This makes Chidambaram extraordinarily unique — one of the very few sacred sites in India where Shaivites and Vaishnavites both consider the same complex as their holiest ground.

Vaishnava pilgrims completing the Divya Desam circuit must visit Chidambaram, making this a temple of deep significance for both traditions of Hinduism.
